- HSK stands for 汉语水平考试 (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì), which is the official Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers. It is designed to assess the Chinese language proficiency of foreigners and overseas Chinese, and is used as a benchmark for Chinese language education and for employers to assess the Chinese language skills of job candidates.
- Chinese stroke order is the order in which the strokes of a Chinese character are written. It is an important aspect of writing Chinese characters by hand, as it determines the correct form to improve handwriting and write characters quickly and legibly. There are generally eight basic strokes in Chinese: horizontal, vertical, left-falling, right-falling, dot, hook, turning, and pressing. The stroke order for a character is usually based on the combination of these basic strokes, and different characters may have different stroke orders.
- Knowing how to use the character is also a very important step in learning characters. The card provides many practical sample sentences formed with the basic necessary characters. We reuse all basic characters covered in our Chinese Character Course many times to reinforce what has been learned. All the sample sentences are very practical and would help to improve spoken Chinese.
- The last very special feature of the card is the character structure pattern icon. The pattern of Chinese character structures can be roughly categorized into 10 types: single-radical, left-right, up-down, up-right, left-down, up-left-down, left-up-right, left-down-right, and enclosure. The pattern not only helps to better understand the whole character, but also the radicals and components used to form the character.
