Pinyin - 拼音 (pīn yīn) - is the most commonly used system for transcribing or spelling out the phonetic sounds of the Mandarin Chinese language. It uses the letters in the Latin alphabet that English speakers are already familiar with. Pinyin is an extremely useful tool and should be the foundation of your Chinese learning. It's actually the first thing that native Chinese children learn before learning characters!
