Meeting Someone Through Texting in Chinese | Practical Chat Story - Beginner Level and Up

We’ve had a really great response to our previous “Chat Story” video series aimed at the Intermediate/Upper Intermediate level, so we wanted to design something with Beginner level students in mind!
First, check out this two-part video between a foreign exchange student from the US, Xiao Mei
, and a Chinese student, Wen Wen, that are meeting for the first time through text!
Try to see how much you can understand by reading the Chinese characters in the video (which includes pinyin hints while each person types).
Then, check out the full script under the video, to get the full breakdown of the conversation in Chinese characters, pinyin, and English!
Students that have completed our Beginner Conversational Course should be familiar with about 80% of the words and phrases used, and those that have finished our Intermediate Conversational Course should know around 90% of this content!

Wen Wen: Hi, Xiao Mei!

Wen Wen: You’re a new student that’s come to study abroad at our university, right?
小美：你好，文文！

小美：是的，我是昨天下午到的！

Wen Wen: After graduating I came to Beijing, I’ve been living here for three years.

Xiao Mei: Wow, I really want to go to Shanghai to have fun/travel!
小美：那你是大三吗？

Xiao Mei: Then are you a junior?
文文：是的！

Wen Wen: Yeah!
文文：我今年二十一岁，应该算是你的学姐吧， 哈哈。

Wen Wen: I’m 21 years old this year, I probably count as your senior, haha.
小美：哈哈，是啊，我今年二十岁了，就差一岁！

Xiao Mei: Haha, yeah, this year I’m 20 years old, off by just one year!

Wen Wen: Where are you staying right now? In the dorms?
小美：对，我就住在我们学校的留学生宿舍，昨天刚入住的！
xiǎo měi: duì wǒ jiù zhù zài wǒ men xué xiào de liú xué shēng sù shè zuó tiān gāng rù zhù de
Xiao Mei: Yeah, I live right in the dorms for students studying abroad at the university, I just moved in yesterday!
文文：哦哦，不错！
wén wen: o o bú cuò
Wen Wen: Oh, that’s good!
文文：那如果你有空的话，我们明天中午见一下，一起吃个饭吧！
wén wen: nà rú guǒ nǐ yǒu kòng de huà wǒ men míng tiān zhōng wǔ jiàn yi xia yì qǐ chī ge fàn ba
Wen Wen: Then if you have time, let’s meet tomorrow afternoon, and have a meal together!
文文：我也可以带你看一下我们的校区！

Wen Wen: I can also take you to see our campus!
小美：好啊，我明天没什么事！

Wen Wen: There’s a restaurant next to our school, the food they cook is really delicious!
文文：你没问题的话，我们可以去那里吃！
wén wen: nǐ méi wèn tí de huà wǒ men kě yǐ qù nà lǐ chī
Wen Wen: If you’re OK with it, we can go there to eat!
小美：习惯！可以啊，那我们在饭店见面吗？
xiǎo měi: xí guàn kě yǐ a nà wǒ men zài fàn diàn jiàn miàn ma
Xiao Mei: I’m used to it! That works, then will we meet at the restaurant?
文文：你应该对校区不太熟悉吧，我还是在留学生宿舍外面等你吧！

Wen Wen: You’re probably not too familiar with the campus, it would be better if I wait for you outside the dorms for students studying abroad!

Wen Wen: The restaurant is close to there, we can walk over together!
